I think you're misinterpreting that quote, based on Thomas Jefferson's other quotes. He was not a fan of religion.

Jefferson was a real Christian, unlike many who carry the banners of Christian America, as if such a thing ever existed apart from the imaginations of certain religious men, ignorant of history and without morals.

"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

“On the dogmas of religion, as distinguished from moral principles, all mankind, from the beginning of the world to this day, have been quarreling, fighting, burning and torturing one another, for abstractions unintelligible to themselves and to all others, and absolutely beyond the comprehension of the human mind.”

“Religions are all alike -- founded upon fables and mythologies.”

“Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burned, tortured, fined, and imprisoned, yet we have not advanced one inch toward uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half of the world fools and the other half hypocrites.”

"And the day will come, when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as His Father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva, in the brain of Jupiter..."

Those quotes seem to suggest strongly that he viewed Christianity as a fairy tale equal to that of Greek mythology.

A fairy tale is a lie, but with purpose and a real-world lesson.

Just because Jesus didn't turn water into wine doesn't mean he wasn't an intelligent fellow. This is essentially the message of the Jefferson Bible--an interesting document, to say the least, in that Thomas removed every magic trick, but kept the miracles of compassion and reason (as best he could).

One could say that by the standards of NixSeraph, Jefferson was an Atheist. By my standards, he is a real Christian--a model for others to follow, rather than something extraordinary.

Perhaps, my standards are too low--I am no Christian, myself. But, I'd like to think no religion is built on the ravings of madmen, fools, and tyrants. Instead, I believe madmen, fools, and tyrants put religion to good use.

Didn't Thomas Jefferson edit the Bible because he thought most of it was useless and, like all the founding fathers, supportive of separation of church and state?

Also, why did you submit this to DAtheist?
